Gelo had been attending OKC blue games recently, but never thought it'd come of anything worth making a video about. And that's Because LiAngelo hasn't played competitive basketball in what feels like forever now, besides the JBA league which concluded November 2018. Gelo's been out of action since he left Vytautas months prior to the 2018 NBA draft. During that time period he's been linked to several teams and league's all across the world, he worked out with a few NBA teams, we expected to see him in 2018 summer league that never happened. He turned down an offer from the London Lions to try out for the G-League. And until yesterday it seemed like there was no mutual interest from G-League teams, not gonna lie I didn't believe neither lavar or gelo when they'd talk about NBA teams being interested in ball in the family. Honestly would've thought to join the Illawarra Hawks as an important player was more likely. But I was gladly mistaken, as opposed to just milking the same what happened to LiAngelo Ball videos every basketball creator on the platform has recycled the past year. We're actually going to being able to put out new LiAngelo Ball content, and that's because as of a report yesterday from Oklahoma sportswriter Joe Mussatto. It was announced that LiAngelo Ball had signed with Oklahoma City Blue as a practice player, taking him a step closer to the NBA than ever before.
Now I must clarify that he is only a practice player as of right now, meaning he's not officially a member of OKC's g-league affiliate. It's routine of G-League teams to bring in practice players, and there's no guarantee that anything more comes of this or he ever even plays a G-League game for the team. But it is a huge step in the right direction and comes at a perfect time too, because at a point where a lot of us myself included who'd pushed for Gelo to have an NBA opportunity, whether that be in the summer league or G-League. Had come to accept that he just wasn't ever going to be an NBA player like his two brothers. Gelo will now at the very least have the opportunity to prove whether or not he's an NBA caliber player.
Now a lot of people are probably wondering how this all came about, well back in September during an episode of the ball in the family it was revealed that OKC was one of three teams interested in adding Gelo to their summer league roster. Nothing ended up coming off that then due to LiAngelo's ankle surgery that has ruled him out for the best part of the year, but as of December 19th when the G-League winter showcase began. LiAngelo has been with the Oklahoma City Blue and obviously made enough of an impression to earn this current deal right now. See what makes this interesting is that there's a lot of players good enough to play in the NBA, that doesn't ever get the opportunity to prove it. Even recently Carmelo Anthony a hall of fame was out of the league for over a year. Before eventually capitalising on his second chance with the Trail Blazers and reviving his career. With this LiAngelo now has a path to the NBA, his job now is just to play and compete with the competition in front of him to the best of his abilities. I think there's a very high chance we see Gelo in next year's summer league, especially with Lamelo coming into the league as well. But for now, let's not get ahead of ourselves and expect Gelo to be playing in the NBA this season, that won't happen. The best-case scenario for him is he wins over a guaranteed contract with the Blues until the end of the season and continues to make his case an NBA player in next year's summer league. I think there's a lot of misconceptions around Gelo's ability as a basketball player, while his name is undeniably bigger than his game he has achieved more in his career so far than given credit for. and yes he isn't as talented as Melo and Zo but he does possess a skillset that perfectly suits the modern NBA role player.
If all works out for Gelo, then there is as good a chance as ever that Lavars wish of having all 3 brothers in the NBA, comes to for wishing.
