Nigeria has a housing deficit of 22 million units, a problem that is compounded by high interest rates and a general lack of access to finance. Simultaneously, urbanization trends have exacerbated the housing problem in major cities such as Lagos, which is expected to grow to a population of 80 million by the end of the century. The Nigeria Mortgage Refinance Company and Family Homes Funds are among the most prominent financial institutions committed to an affordable housing agenda that includes sustainability. They view EDGE certification as a practical solution to verify the resource efficiency of homes in Nigeria and beyond.
