(28 Jan 2020) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: apus130134 President Donald Trump's legal team argued forcefully against the relevance of testimony from Trump's former national security adviser John Bolton on Tuesday as the lawyers neared the end of their defense and the Senate braced for debate on whether to summon Bolton and other witnesses into the impeachment trial.
Following Tuesday's arguments, Chuck Schumer, the Senate's top Democrat, called on Republican Senators to vote in favor of letting witnesses and documents into the trial.
"All we need is four who rise to the occasion and say 'we need to find out the truth,'" Schumer told reporters.
"These witnesses we've asked for are not Democrats. They're not anti-Trump people. They're his own appointees," he said.
Senate Republicans were to meet behind closed doors to consider next steps.
Trump is charged with abusing his presidential power by asking Ukraine's leader to help investigate Biden at the same time his administration was withholding hundreds of millions of dollars in security aid. A second charge accuses Trump of obstructing Congress in its probe.
