READ ALONG TO PRACTICE YOUR ENGLISH AND TO LEARN THE MEANING OF IT'S A SMALL WORLD AND FANCY MEETING YOU HERE: So sometimes you're talking to someone and they mention that they know someone that you also know. When this happens, often in English we will say, "Wow, it's a small world!" Because we are surprised that the person we are talking to knows someone that we also know. I had this happen once a long time ago where someone new started at work and they were talking about the person who their daughter had married and that person ended up being the son of someone that I knew growing up, so I said them, "Wow, it's a small world!" Sometimes you don't realize how interconnected people are. Sometimes the world is much smaller than we think and we end up finding out that people know the same people that we do. I'm sure if any of us ever met in real life we would soon realize that we know some of the same people and then we could say to each other, "Wow, it's a small world." We have another phrase that we say when we meet someone in a place we aren't expecting to meet them and we say, "Fancy meeting you here." Sometimes we even say, "Fancy seeing you here." This happened once to me when I was young. My family went on a trip, we went on vacation and we ended up meeting people that lived just around the corner from us. So even though we were over 1,000 kilometers from home we ended up running into, or meeting, people that lived just a kilometer from us at our home. So when we saw them we probably said this, I don't remember, but we probably said, "Wow, fancy meeting you here!" Because we did not expect to meet people who lived so close to us when we were in a place that was so far away.
