Chaotic Government reshuffles have almost become a tradition in British politics. David Cameron and Theresa May always seemed to preside over a farce when it came to hiring an firing – and Boris Johnson is no different. It seems he told his erstwhile chancellor Sajid Javid he could keep his job – on the condition that he sacked his aides. Javid refused and quit the second-most powerful job in the UK Cabinet after only a few months at the helm. It is widely suspected that the poison pill Javid refused to swallow was manufactured by Johnson aide Dominic Cummings, who led Vote Leave to victory in 2016. Cummings also helped engineer Johnson’s general election victory and now wants to oversee a revolution in government. This means ridding the civil service of refuseniks and axing advisers he believes are either useless or leaky. Javid’s departure is a very worrying moment for our democracy. Cabinet should be a forum for spirited debate and ministers should be in control of their own portfolios. However, Johnson seems determined to install political toadies into key positions and have departments answer to Cummings. Johnson is behaving more like an arrogant king than a Prime Minister. Someone needs to remind him that politicians should run the Government, not unelected advisers. Shame on you Alan Hay was clearly in pain and desperately in need of help. Whatever his crime, the suffering he was forced to endure is shameful. Alan, 49, cried out for assistance after being taken to a Dumfries police cell. That’s when his real ordeal began. Police mocked him, left him to lick medicine off his mattress and appeared to refuse to take his cries of distress seriously. Police have a tough job. They are used to dealing with thugs every day. But the signs in this case were clear. A sheriff said officers were mocking, offensive and insulting. A man was left to suffer when police could have done so much more.
