A Major new survey of South East Asian (SEA) countries shows that the Philippines harbors the greatest fears over the economic and political influence of Beijing in the South China Sea region. The Singaporean think-tank, ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute’s ASEAN Studies Center, surveyed the opinions of officials, academics and other professionals in SEA, in an attempt to understand the perceptions of Southeast Asians on regional affairs. The survey, titled “The State of Southeast Asia”, interviewed 1,308 respondents in 10 countries. Although 80 percent identified China as the most influential economic power in the region, up to seven points from last year, a majority of respondents harbored a deep distrust of Beijing’s economic and political clout.
