Pilot Injured After Long Island Plane Crash

A pilot escaped serious injury after his Mooney M-20J Fixed Wing Single Engine plane crashed in a wooded area in Farmingdale, New York. On December 28, 2019 at 4:05 p.m., multiple emergency responders including East Farmingdale Fire Company responded to the reported aircraft crash right off the Southern State Parkway.

The plane took off from Francis S. Gabreski Airport in Westhampton Beach and was approaching the runway at Republic Airport in Farmingdale when it lost power. According To Flight Radars the plane was 22 minutes into the flight when it crashed about a mile from the runway at Republic Airport.

Agencies from multiple fire departments across Suffolk & Nassau Counties responded to the crash site. Due to the nature of the crash and proximity to the airport an Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) Crash truck from Republic Airport responded to the scene.

Fire officials say the pilot was able to self evacuate the plane after the crash and only suffered minor injuries.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) & National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will take the lead on the investigation.
