Why China Wants to Procure SU-57? | China failed at WS-15 engine development? Most Chinese fighters have been running on some variation of the WS-10 engine for a while. It’s essentially a heavily modified KC-135 engine made to fit the mounting hardware that the AL-31 engine uses ( the engine used on most Su-27 family members).

The AL-31 always had issues with smoking though, and China wanted to jump start their aviation industry and mitigate that issue, which is why they built the WS-10.

And while the WS-10B is an excellent engine, comparing reasonably well the with the AL-31FM2 ( essentially, a more powerful AL-31 with improved durability. WS-10B needs more frequent maintenance, but it doesn’t smoke to my knowledge), the AL-41F-1S on the Su-35 changes things a bit.
