I spoke with Marvin Mims at-length, and I'll have a story about him later this but here a few takeaways: —He signed with Oklahoma as a member of Lincoln Riley's 2020 recruiting class.
—He's wildly humble and down-to-earth: When I asked him what he planned to do after football, he said he wanted to get a good job after four or five years at OU and, hopefully, put a degree in mechanical or electrical engineering to use. He's taking calculus now and plans to take it next semester when he enrolls early. His persona is that of an offensive lineman happy to do his job and help the team win. The last thing I'd expect from him is demand the ball.
—He didn't know he was a record-setter: Mims told me he had no knowledge that he was close to the Texas high school state record for receiving yards in a career until the Wednesday before the Friday game he'd break the record playing in. He didn't know he'd set a national record until a friend sent him a screenshot of a Dallas Morning News tweet.
—He's likely to play inside receiver, but that can change. He's versatile enough to play outside.
—He picked Oklahoma over Stanford because he decided he wanted to play closer to home, and he's got two older siblings who have gone to school in Texas and another who lives in Baton Rouge. (He never received real interest from LSU.)
—Mims set the national single-season record for receiving yards (2,629) and the Texas high school football record for receiving yards in a career with 5,485 breaking Texas Longhorn wide out Jordan Shipley's record.
