One of the defining features of theories of the so-called 'political turn' in animal ethics is that they take animals not just to be bearers of moral status, but also political status. Indeed, a good many such theories claim that we should come to recognise some animals as shared members of multi-species political communities. Recognising the membership status of animals has some important implications for what duties they are ‘owed’. Dr Alasdair Cochrane contributes to this discussion by asking whether it is possible to use 'hate speech' against animals.
