How to fix the cracking noise of the LEGO Technic 42110 Land Rover Defender

I read a lot of negative comments online about the gearbox of the LEGO Technic 42110 Land Rover Defender, lot of people saying that it does not work at all for them in higher gears, all their get is a terrible cracking noise and the fake engine is not running.
