China has significantly increased its soft power in the region over the past decade and stands to lose a lot if its aggressive behavior in the South China Sea continues. But instead of softening its approach, it has recently stepped up its kinetic pressure on several of its rival claimants in the South China Sea, including Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

In late July, the US State Department accused China of “bullying” some Southeast Asian countries and threatening “regional energy security” by blocking their access to unexploited hydrocarbon resources.

For the last three months, China undertook marine scientific research in what is Vietnam claims as its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in spite of its vociferous protests.
